Stipends

All Chemistry graduate students at Rice University receive financial support throughout the twelve-month year.

Entering students are normally awarded an annual stipend of $36,000. After completion of the first semester, students are supported through Research Assistantships or numerous other Research Associate Fellowships. Stipend levels are reviewed annually by the Department and are periodically adjusted to reflect changes in the cost of living in the Houston area.

Incoming students are encouraged to apply for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Applications for these awards must be submitted by the student in October.

Rice University is one of 14 institutions at which fellowships from the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation are tenable. Application materials are due by November 1.

Some students come to Rice University with external fellowship support that provides stipends lower than the rate paid by Rice. It has been Departmental policy to supplement those fellowship stipends so that the recipients are not penalized financially.
