Experimental Physical Chemistry

Physical chemistry at Rice University seeks to understand and control chemical phenomena by uncovering the fundamental physical principles that govern molecular structure, dynamics, and function. Our research spans ultrafast spectroscopy, nanoscale imaging, photochemistry and photophysics, chemical dynamics, biophysical chemistry, and the study of complex molecular and nanoscale systems. Faculty and students develop and apply advanced experimental techniques to probe chemical processes across a wide range of length and time scales, from electronic and excited-state dynamics to energy transport, molecular self-assembly, and the interactions of molecules with their surrounding environments. By revealing the mechanisms that underlie chemical function, we advance fundamental understanding of chemical and biological systems while addressing challenges in energy conversion, nanotechnology, and human health. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, we train the next generation of scientists to uncover and control chemical processes in both natural and engineered systems.
