RESEARCH THEMES

Chemistry for Energy & Sustainability

Energy and sustainability research in the Rice University Department of Chemistry addresses critical challenges in energy conversion, storage, and resource utilization through molecular design and fundamental chemical discovery. Our faculty develop new catalysts, functional materials, and molecular systems for applications in solar energy harvesting, electrochemistry, carbon capture and utilization, sustainable synthesis, and environmental remediation. By investigating chemical processes at both the molecular and nanoscale levels, researchers seek to improve the efficiency of energy generation and storage, reduce environmental impact, and enable more sustainable approaches to chemical manufacturing. Through interdisciplinary collaborations that span chemistry, materials science, engineering, and environmental science, we advance innovative solutions to global energy and sustainability challenges while training the next generation of scientists to build a cleaner and more sustainable future.
