The Rice University chapter of Fun with Chemistry recently captivated an audience of second graders at neighboring Roberts Elementary. Equipped with liquid nitrogen, balloons, a torch, and a pumpkin, the graduate student volunteers presented a series of experiments designed to get young students excited about science. A few lucky students were selected to assist with the experiments while the rest watched with anticipation. Among the audience was department chair Anatoly Kolomeisky’s daughter, making this presentation extra special. The Fun with Chemistry chemists will continue touring schools and community events, with new experiments and an eagerness to share their love of science with all audiences.
Fun with Chemistry is an outreach organization dedicated to inspiring and motivating K-12 students to develop an interest in and pursue careers in science fields. Originating at The University of Texas at Austin with Dr. Kate Biberdorf, Fun with Chemistry began a collaboration with Rice University through Professor László Kürti in 2017 in order to expand the range of impact.
